Excursion Dougga Thuburbo Majus (8 HOURS)

Full day excursion and recommended for guests staying at the resorts of Tunis and Gammarth, Hammamet and Sousse and Port Kantaoui.
Those who like the Roman archeology can’t be in Tunisia without wanting to spend a day in the most preserved and largest Roman site of North Africa: Dougga then stop at the vast and fertile Thuburbo Majus.
Places to visit:
DOUGGA (UNESCO)
Thugga, Thugges or Thugenses is the so called Dougga today.

Excursion Dougga Thuburbo Majus

Without a doubt, Dougga today is the most preserved and largest Roman site in North Africa. Extensive excavations started in the late 19th century by the French and carried on until 1997 when the archeological site became a UNESCO world heritage thanks to the large number of inscriptions found on the site and are a huge reference and documentation to the specialists.
Originally Dougga was the royal residence of one of the greatest Numidian kings of North Africa: Massinissa.
The luxury and the size of the monuments are the witness of the wealth such as: the theatre, the forum, the capital, the market, the baths, the tripholium house, the private homes and the latrines.
The Lybico-Punic mausoleum, the original Numidian roads and the way of building (opus africanus) witness the Numidian architecture and are considered to be one of the finest examples referring to that era in the world.
THUBURBO MAJUS
In 1857 French diplomat Charles-Joseph Tissot came to the conclusion that the ruins he visited at Henchir lagsab, thirty miles south of Tunis, were those of Thuburbo Majus.
Henchir is an Arabic word meaning “farm with ruins” and the discovery of seven ancient Roman towns was facilitated by their ruins being referred to as henchir. The 1895 Murray’s Handbook for travelers in Algeria and Tunisia made reference to Thuburbo Minus, an ancient Roman town in the Mejrada River valley, but ignored the existence of Thuburbo Majus, because at the time the site was yet to be excavated.
The monuments to visit on the site today are: the forum, the capital, the winter bath, the summer bath, the olive press, the temple of Baal and several private homes with the original mosaics still in place.

EL HAOUARIA
El Haouaria is the closest point between Tunisia and Europe. El Haouaria best known for the Roman quarries. When the Romans rebuilt Carthage as a Roman city, much of the stone needed was taken out of the mountain close to El Haouaria, and the holes are now known as the Roman caves.

THE BERBER VILLAGES (6 HOURS)

THE BERBER VILLAGES (6 HOURS)

Full day excursion and recommended for guests staying at the resorts of Tunis and Gammarth, Hammamet and Sousse and Port Kantaoui.
Without having to drive all the way to the south where the largest Berber centers are and close to the resorts, discover the beauty, simplicity and rich tradition of the Berber life and architecture.
Places to visit
JRADOU
Is a small citadel hung atop a rocky promontory. It is a picturesque place that lives on agriculture and processing halfa. The central square, as big as a pocket handkerchief, concentrates the activity of the village. A few miles away; between pine and olive trees, a cottage offers an immersion in nature and local traditions.
TAKROUNA
Takrouna overlooks the Gulf of Hammamet, Hergla, Sousse, jbel Zaghouan and Kairouan. This strategic location made it the field of several battles during the Second World War.
The village consists of stone houses whose architecture reflects the Berber construction methods: a small inner courtyard surrounded by vaulted rooms. Six families of Berber origin and the Gmach (Gomez) family from Andalusia (Andalusian emigrants in 1609) still live in Takrouna. The village is divided in four levels: the Gmach family live on the fourth level. As for the Berbers, they live at the bottom of the hill. The third level holds the mausoleum of Sidi Abdelkader built in the 13th century.
ZERIBA
The old village, Zriba Alia (Zriba high), of Berber origin, is located about three kilometres south of Hammam Zriba. Built between two rocky peaks, the town now in ruins overlooks Jebel Zaghouan, the second highest peak in Tunisia after the Djebel Chambi.
In the middle of the old town is a dedicated Zawiya Sidi Abdel Kader Jilani, founder of the Qadiriyya buried in Baghdad. This Zawiya, built in the seventeenth century, has been a very thorough restoration; it features antique architectural elements and played the role of Koranic school (maktab) for young children.

ZAGHOUAN & OUDHNA (6 HOURS)

ZAGHOUAN & OUDHNA (6 HOURS)

Half a day excursion and recommended for guests staying at the resorts of Tunis and Gammarth, Hammamet and Sousse and Port Kantaoui.
When Carthage grew in size huge quantities of water were needed, Zaghouan was the place that supplied the water from its natural springs through a 132 kilometer aqueduct ending in Carthage. Half way through from Zaghouan to Carthage is Oudna: an extremely promising site compared by archeologists to Carthage.
Places to visit:
ZAGHOUAN
Zaghouan is one of the few small cities of Tunisia whose population has a unique and special character.
It consists largely of descendants of the expelled Moors of Andalusia, where Othman Dey established a settlement in the early seventeenth.
Well known, since antiquity, for its springs and its pure water, the Zaghouan region early became a source of water supply for Carthage but also an agricultural landscape structured by the wheat fields and olive fields’ terrain and the production of the chechia, the national headgear of Tunisia.
OUDHNA
Oudna was a Roman settlement, better known as Uthina. Access from Carthage is by vehicle and this was also an airbase in the Second World War.
When you arrive in Oudna the one thing that will stand out is the magnificent amphitheater which is partly carved into the hillside. The amphitheater used to seat up to sixteen thousand spectators and is an impressive sight to see.
Other amazing ruins include the forum with its beautiful mosaics. There are also temples, vaults and bath houses scattered around this ancient city.
Wandering around Oudna will give you a true sense of what it must have been like living in Tunisia all those centuries ago. While excavation work is still being carried out, there are many of the ruins, cisterns and temples that you can visit and experience yourself.
